5 Brutally Honest Lessons We Learned Building an AI Sales Platform
Sales doesn’t need more tools. It needs better ones. Here’s what we learned building one.
We’re in the middle of building an AI product for sales. And like with any build that involves both technology and people, there’s been a lot to unlearn, rework, and rethink.
In the process, we’ve learned a lot about AI, sales workflows, and what teams really need when they say “automation.”
We figured this might be useful if you’re working on an AI product or part of a sales tech stack, or just curious about how it all plays out behind the scenes.
Here are five brutally honest lessons we’ve learned while building SparrowGenie.
1. AI isn’t here to replace reps—it’s here to rescue them.
There’s a myth that AI is coming for sales jobs. But the truth is simpler: it’s just finally coming for the admin work.
What is the most powerful thing AI can do for sales?
Give reps their time back—so they can focus on the human parts of selling: listening, adapting, and closing.
AI isn’t the star. People are. Always.
Here’s a clear case of AI enhancing human work, not eliminating it.
2. Security isn’t an add-on. It’s the product.
You can’t tack on security at the end of a workflow and call it enterprise-ready.
Especially when legal teams, IT, and procurement are part of the sales process.
If your AI can’t handle compliance, encryption, data access, and audit trails, it’s not helping. It’s creating risk.
And risk slows down deals faster than any bottleneck.
3. Hallucination isn’t just a bug. It’s a liability.
Everyone loves the magic of AI until it confidently writes something completely false, especially in a proposal. Hallucinations may be funny in demos, but they’re dangerous in deal documents.
Control, structure, and validation aren’t optional. They’re essential.
4. “Sounds human” isn’t the end goal. “Drives outcomes” is.
We’ve all read AI-written text that sounds natural but says absolutely nothing.
Fluency is not the same as usefulness.
The job of AI isn’t to impress.
It’s to move things forward—whether that’s closing a proposal loop faster, aligning teams, or preparing for a call without three follow-ups.
5. People don’t want AI. They want time back.
Nobody’s asking for more AI in their day.
They’re asking for less busywork. Fewer revisions. More time to do the work that actually matters.
AI that quietly disappears the admin—that’s the kind that sticks.
The rest? Just noise.
